Ban likely for “very problematic landlord” says council

Ban likely for “very problematic landlord” says council

A local authority has taken the unorthodox step of saying an unidentified “very problematic landlord” is likely to be banned.

Local media in Yorkshire say that a report to a Bradford council meeting made reference to the landlord.

He (or she) currently lets 18 properties and has incurred £40,000 of fines, most for offences concerning property condition.

The authority has applied to take out a banning order that will prevent the landlord from letting or managing any residential property for a specified period.

The result of the application is likely in the next three months.

If the ban goes ahead, the council will end up managing the properties for the duration of the ban, and underwriting improvements to make them legal.

The same council has revealed that during the 2024/25 financial year it served 43 community penalty notices to non-compliant landlords.

If all those fines were collected they would have the value of £296,000. But the council admits that it could take months or years to collect that amount.
