A new activist leader with experience of “person-centred campaigning” has taken the helm at a tenants’ umbrella group.
Clara Collingwood is the new interim director of the Renters Reform Coalition (RRC).
The coalition is a collection of organisations including Generation Rent, Shelter, the National Union of Students, Greater Manchester Tenants Union and the London Renters Union. Its partner organisations include the Roma Support Group and the Greater London Authority.
Collingwood succeeds former director Tom Darling, who last year accused landlord groups of a “cunning sleight of hand” when they said landlords were quitting because of increased red tape.
Collingwood as previously campaign manager at Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK, and is described by her new employers at bringing “significant experience of person-centred campaigning … working in coalitions on sensitive issues, campaigning in Westminster and navigating political structures.”
She says: “I am delighted to be joining this coalition of campaigners at such a seismic moment for renter’s [sic] rights.
“With the landmark Renters’ Rights Act coming into force this year, millions of tenants stand to win greater security and safety in our homes, so long as the act is properly enforced.
“I look forward to working to make sure this law makes a real difference in people’s lives.
“We can and must build on this hard-won success to address the cost of rent, poor standards and other factors that have made it harder for renters to enjoy secure and flourishing lives for far too long.”
