Steve Reed was last week appointed as Housing Secretary to replace Angela Rayner after her resignation.
He arrives with a busy inbox, especially with the Renters’ Rights Bill returning to Parliament this week.
The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) has welcomed him to the role.
Ben Beadle, chief executive of the NRLA, said: “At a time of substantial change for the rental market, we look forward to working constructively with him. Top of the agenda will need to be ensuring the smooth implementation of the Renters’ Rights Bill.
“Alongside this there is a desperate need to support long term investment in new decent quality homes to rent and ensure the private rented sector operates on the basis of trust and confidence between landlords and tenants.”
Reed, Labour/Co-operative MP for Streatham and Croydon North since 2012, hasn’t always had the most positive view of landlords.
He has spoken out in Parliament about landlords refusing basic repairs on homes in his constituency and has historically backed licensing.
Reed supported raising the additional rates of Stamp Duty in 2024 and has also backed the Renters’ Rights Bill.
