Private rental repossessions surge – new long-term analysis

A new study claims there has been a remarkable 562% increasing in private rental sector repossessions over the past five years.

The study, which is based on completed repossessions carried out by county court bailiffs, shows:

  • Over the past five years, more than 93,000 renters have been evicted;
  • Eviction rates are up 562% when compared with the low eviction rate during the first Covid year or 2020;
  • Renter repossessions hit 27,117 in 2024.

Some eight in 10 tenant repossessions are in London, while nationwide people aged 25 to 34 are the most common demographic who are evicted.

In the capital, Newham recorded 737 completed repossessions in 2024, equivalent to 196.8 per 100,000 residents. Second highest was Enfield, with 187.8 repossessions per 100,000 residents.

Outside the capital Slough, Hastings, Milton Keynes, Gravesham and Luton have relatively high proportions of evictions of private tenants.
