Judge urges politicians to tackle landlord complacency on drugs

A judge is suggesting politicians tighten up rules about landlord due diligence when it comes to vetting tenants.

The comment – from a judge at Swansea Crown Court – comes following the jailing of a man found working at a cannabis farm in a privately rented property.

According to Wales Online the judge said he and fellow judges were all surprised that police were not are not putting “more effort” into identifying those running cannabis growing operations and were not “vigorously pursuing” what arrangements were in place with landlords.

He said politicians may want to consider whether laws were strict enough in terms of landlords vetting tenants.

Police found that the rental property at the centre of the court case had a specially strengthened and barricaded front door, while the entire premises had been converted into a large cannabis operation spread across five rooms. The defendant working there fled through the back door but was quickly detained and arrested.

A search of the house found a total of 398 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of up to £171,000.
